  Pattern Welding
For modern steel, I generally use 
1095 and 15n20 cores with W1 or 1095 edges.

For a step up in accuracy, I occasionally do it in wrought iron
that I carburize for the edges, with twisted wrought iron for the cores. The iron is from 19th century anchor chain.

For a pull out the stops, fully accurate version I will create one
from iron that I make in a viking age smelting
furnace, and fully process in my own shop.
